International Conference IPC 2025
Through eternity, the human self finds the courage to lose itself, to find itself anew.
— С. Kierkegaard
International Conference IPC 2025
“Freedom”. Narine Papyan (Yerevan, Armenia)
About the conference
Supported by Eastern Europe Committee of the International New Groups Committee (ING) of the IPA
and “Arevamanuk” foundation.
Dear colleagues, we invite you to participate in the international psychoanalytic conference, which will take place from October 4 to 8 in the city of Gyumri, Armenia.
Members of the International Psychoanalytical Association from various cities and countries will present their theoretical papers on the topic of the conference, which will be discussed in small discussion groups.
Participants will have the opportunity to discuss clinical material in groups in Russian and English, as well as during individual supervisions (individual supervisions must be arranged in advance with any member of the Program Committee).
During the conference, a general meeting of the members of the Integrative Psychoanalytic Community will take place, where the prospects for establishing an IPA study group and organizing psychoanalytic education under the auspices of the IPA will be discussed.
IPA members and candidates, as well as professionals interested in psychoanalytic training, are invited to take part in the conference.
For any questions regarding participation in the conference, please contact the members of the Organizing Committee.

The number of participants is limited.
Registration is open until September 1, 2025.

Through eternity, the human self finds the courage to lose itself, to find itself anew.
— С. Kierkegaard
Primary states can always arise again. The primary psyche in its own sense is indestructible.
— S. Freud
Contemporary man - fragile, anxious, torn by uncertainty, exists in a world of irreversible change. He balances on the edge of chronic stress, despair and mental exhaustion, and in search of salvation often uses more primitive but seemingly safe forms of life, i.e. regresses.
Psychoanalysis allows one to face/immerse/contact the psychically painful experiences from which the patient suffers and ‘tends to give the self the courage to induce regression (fear of loss of self), whereby the self will ultimately “acquire a different self”’ (B. Kilbourne).
But regression is not only a recurrence. In the analytical process, hoped to be «controlled» and «meaningful», it becomes a ‘bridge to authenticity’ (as in D. Winnicott's concept of true and false self). It is also the source of creativity: dreaming, play, art are born in this boundary state, where chaos takes shape.
Regression is a backward movement in which a new self is born. S. Freud postulated the ‘deferred action» (die Nachtraglichkeit in German, après-coup in French). - the law according to which the present experience melts the past.
It is important to note the primary emotional effect of the regressive state - the observer experiences shock, surprise, fear. If one manages to survive this first shocking experience, it is becoming possible to think, to give meaning to the event, to enter it into one's history.
It is also possible to consider social processes from the angle of regression - are the crises of humanity as a whole a process of evolutionary movement through regression and creative rethinking of old forms, or do they lead to the destruction of civilization as such?
Both in the analytical situation and in social processes, one can never be sure whether regression leads to development, greater capacity of the social field, greater authenticity and human freedom in the world, or whether the process can take a malignant form, lead to a halt in development, and often to self - and mutual destruction.
Are there ‘good enough’ analysts of social processes in today's world who can help the development of humanity and who can be heard?
Life is becoming more complex; the psychic tissue is being woven into new and intricate patterns. Institutional boundaries, the framework of the analytical session, are meant to be those secure ‘walls’ within which we can venture to be different.
At the upcoming conference we invite you to the conversation about regression in the psychoanalytic process, about the dangerous ‘dead spots’ of regressive states, but also about regression as a new possibility - a potential for personal development, about the peculiarities, difficulties and pleasures of analytical work with regressive states.
An important task of the conference is to create new and strengthen existing links between professionals with a shared history (IPA members, alumni of PIEE - EPI and other IPA institutes), as well as with those psychoanalytically-oriented professionals who are interested in co-operating in the development of psychoanalysis. The Integrative Psychoanalytic Community established during 2024 conference invites all those who are interested in continuing the dialogue at the 2nd conference in cozy Gyumri!

Transfer
There is an international airport in Gyumri, from which it is quite easy to get to the city center by taxi, we recommend using the YandexGO application, it accepts all cards and cash. Taking a taxi “on the spot” can be very expensive and uncomfortable. Make sure you have the application on your phone. Most likely, your flight will be to Yerevan; the airport in Yerevan serves a lot of flights from different countries. The road from Yerevan to Gyumri by car takes 2 hours and costs about 50 euros. In this case, also, use the YandexGO or GG application directly from the airport. For convenience and economy, we will create a chat in telegram so that conference participants can easily find colleagues or a colleague who will arrive at a similar time, so that in a pleasant company, by taxi, you can get to Gyumri. You can also get to Gyumri from Yerevan by electric train and bus. Contact representatives of the local organizing committee if you need further details.
Meals at the Conference
Breakfast is included in the accommodation cost in many hotels. Please check this with your hotel manager or ask a member of the local organizing committee for assistance.
A welcome cocktail will be organized at the conference venue and is included in the registration fee. The exact location of the welcome cocktail will be announced later.
Coffee breaks will be available in the conference area during scheduled breaks.
Lunches and dinners are self-organized. The city center is quite compact, so finding a good place to eat will not be difficult. We have prepared a small guide — [HERE].
A gala dinner will be held on the final day of the conference.
It is paid separately — €55. Please indicate in the registration form if you would like to attend the gala dinner.
ABOUT THE VENUE
The conference will take place at GITC (Gyumri Information Technologies Center), located in the very heart of Gyumri, directly across from the city park.
Address: 1 Gayi Street, Gyumri.
GITC is one of Armenia’s leading educational and technological institutions, known for its innovative programs in IT and engineering. The building combines contemporary architecture with elements that reflect the historical spirit of Gyumri — the second-largest city in Armenia.
The center is within walking distance of the city’s main landmarks, and its windows overlook a spacious park — one of the most beloved public spaces in Gyumri.
